Valley of Flowers trip, 2013 : Govindghat Washed Away by Alaknanda!

Present Condition of Govindghat, Weather there is any possibility for a trip to Valley of Flowers in 2013

Hello all,

I feel very sad to inform that Govindghat , our trek starting point for Valley of Flowers trek is destroyed almost completely in recent flood in Alaknanda river. Most of the hotels in lower region are swept away by Alaknanda. One helicopter which was parked on the bank of river Alaknanda is also washed away in the flood. Amy vehicles like tempo travelers, suv’s , two wheelers etc are also washed away in the river Alaknanda. Exact number could not be determined but they will be more than 200. Only bridge connecting Govindghat and Ghangaria is also washed out. Almost everyone in the Govindghat is ruined. It happened suddenly and many people got stuck in Ghagaria. Ghangria is a small remote village where generally supplies are very less and generally it is done by ponies. Most of the shopkeepers in the village and along the trek are very poor people who wait for the season for their earnings and due to this accident they do have any hope left for this year. Many houses in village Pulna is also washed out by floods in Pushpawati river.

Currently Indo Tibet Border Police (ITBP) and Indian Army are doing rescue work. Now their main focus is on rescuing people. I hope if the weather is ok BRO (Border Road Organization) may start building of roads later this month. They have already opened some part of National Highway between Joshimath and Rudra Prayag.

Weather there will be trips to Valley of Flowers this year (2013).

It is possible only when the broken bridge is rebuilt on Alaknanda River at the start of the trek. I hope it will be done within a month and we may resume our trips to Valley of Flowers. Let us wait and watch. I feel that this destruction of nature is retaliation by nature to human activities in Himalayas. Lots of Dams are constructed in last 10 years. Even they will be constructing dam on river Alaknanda. Watch the picture below. I appeal all that let nature be nature else it will adjust itself to be as it want to be. Sometimes I feel that earth would have been heaven without human beings. I do not know why God (If it exists) created human beings.

      Hello,
The Yatra started on 25th May itself and everything is fine, the trek is even better than it was earlier. Everything is fine just plan your travel and go. you can see our page Will Valley of Flowers open in 2014? This page has many pictures of the trek between Govindghat and Ghangaria.

    next year possible to vof

    • Yes Valley of Flowers is possible next year. In fact I have been to Valley of Flowers this year after the disaster in first week of October. The good news is that the flowering area and most of the valley is intact except a little part of the trek to the Valley of Flowers. I will be soon posting a new post with pictures of the Valley of Flowers after the disaster. Keep following the blog.

I think the roads will open up pretty soon. The locals and BRO are one kick ass team and usually open the roads very quickly. Roads are national highway and quite frequently used my military, its very likely the route will be opened very soon. I cant say anything about damage in 3km buffer zone or any other significant damage inside the Valley of Flowers. Do you have any news about aftermath of rise river levels inside the Valley of Flowers, specially last few kilometers leading to glacier? I went to Valley of Flowers last year in august, it was very awesome place. My advice will be to avoid the place, let the place get back on its feet. Let the facilities improve. No point going there this year and get stuck/suffer to do lack of facilities. it will be quite frustrating if you would have to abandon the trip mid way or at some point. If you still want to go, Valley of Flowers is open still Sep 30, so please double check everything and go there over prepared. Best of luck.

    • Hello Spirit,
Thanks for posting. Nice views and yes the BRO has opened the road from Joshimath to Govindghat yesterday for small vehicles, it will soon be opened for buses. But the main concern is beyond Govindghat as discussed in recent posts.

    Dear Devkantji,
I am visiting Valley of Flowers in August second week. Is it possible or shall I cancel my trip?. Please let me know

  7. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan Laxmikant says:

    Hello Devkant Sir,

Firstly a very thankful for the wonderful information provided for the Valley Of Flowers.

I know that this year the trip is not feasible it is advice to avoid this beautiful section for the year.

Though this, our organizer (here in Pune) confirms that they are going for the trek this year as things will be back normal by start of August.

So, can you please comment on our organisers point above as you have been and are close to the place then we here at Pune.

Appreciate your time and waiting for your reply.

    Regards,
    Laxmikant Maitri

    • Hello Laxmikant,

According to me it is not at all feasible this year. I had bookings of about 250 people this year and I postponed them to next year. Although I gave them an another option of coming with me for a trek to Kuari Pass. If you wish you can join me for the trek. I am constantly in ouch with locals and forest officials, there are lots of hurdles in the trip to Valley of Flowers this year. I have called off my trips this year. Ghangaria may be accessible by August end only. There is no trek between Bhyuandar and a bridge on Pushpawati River. (kilometers of trek is missing). You can call me at +91 999275690 for more details.

As of now it really seems impossible that Valley of Flowers will be accessible by August. There are many things to be done to open the trek and unfortunately they can be done one by one only and can not be started all at once. First a bridge over Alaknanda River is to be constructed at Govindghat and then three kilometer trek is to be repaired / constructed between Govindghat and Ghangaria. Then only village Ghangaria will be accessible. Once village Ghangaria is accessible the work on a bridge over Pushpawati River can be started. Knowing the government (P.W.D. Uttrakahnd is responsible for the trek) condition it seems very difficult that the trek to Valley of Flowers can be opened so early. All the best.

        Hello Devkant Sir,

Many thanks for you kind and detailed reply.

We will be cancelling our trip to the wonderful place and will miss it for sure.

Wish things to settle out there soon and God help all.

        Regards,
        Laxmikant Maitri

Those who are planning for Valley of Flowers trek in 2013, please get confirmation from forest department. They normally restrict visitors to hike to valley even under heavy rain and as per their information this place is now close for visitors. So, please before planning get confirmation from them that they allow you to hike to the valley.

I personally request all the persons who want to visit the Valley of Flowers to follow the advise of Mr. Devkant. I did it last August when there was some problems of landslides, he was the person who encouraged me to make my trek a grand success. Plz dont, go for any adventure right now, remember the place is wild!!

  10. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan Aman Raj says:

I was planning for this trip from last 2 years, and was cancelled because no one wanted to come up for this trip, ultimately when I was set and going alone for this trip… 🙁
This sad news come up.. 🙁
Still i don’t wanna U-Turn, can you please tell me clearly about the trek in current situation in the first week of August. I was planning for this trip on 9 August from Delhi.
Rest in peace for those souls of people who lost their lives in this disaster.

even if the road/bridge is done in a month…i doubt if there are any flowers in valley considering landslides/rainfall/floods

  12. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan Minmod says:

The problem is how to go to Gangria from Govingaht without the bridge. I will go there in the next two week, hopefully all are fixed! We cannot cancel itinerary to Valley of Flowers because everything is fit to the plan except the weather!

    • Hello Minmod,
Kindly talk to me before starting for the trip. I hope a temporary bridge will be constructed soon. I am watching the situation on daily basis. Road between Joshimath and Rishikesh is already open. The road between Joshimath and Govindghat is still under repair. I hope that our brave army-men will do it soon. Hats off to them.

  13. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan nivedita says:

    hi,
we are planing to Valley of Flowers in the month of august, is it possible?

  14. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan VIPRAV says:

I agree with you completely. When you interfere with nature the nature retaliates. No one can stop the anger of Mother Earth . 🙁 Btw I wanted to ask you – When will the trips resume? I mean the tentative date. do we have to wait for another year for Vof?

  15. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan shalzmojo says:

I was planning to head there in 1st week of Aug. Fingers crossed for all the repair work and rescue operations to be successful. I doubt I will be going this year though!

  16. Avatar for Devkant Sangwan Veena Deepak says:

Our friends already planned and booked for the trip….Is there any possibilities for the tour?
